Island History

Nevis History goes back thousands of years to the Amerindians whose remains are still frequently found along the coast and even further inland. Archeologists still come and dig up their remains. Unfortunately, by the time Columbus sighted Nevis, they all seem to have disappeared. Thus Nevis became an ideal location for Europeans "passing through". It was first recognised as a Brittish Colony in 1628 and the existing settlement, Jamestown, became the capital. Numerous religious groups have come here to escape persecution, including Catholics (the "infestation was removed and sent to Jamiaca" under order of Oliver Cromwell in 1649), Quakers, Jews, and Methodists. Alexander Hamilton was born here and Horatio Nelson got married on Nevis. You can go visit the Heritage Village at Fothergills on your own, or join us to explore old ruins on the Mountainside! Nevis is covered with old roads and footpaths, as well as history!
